Workers’ Party Leader Celebrates Nation’s Multiracial Unity Through Grassroots Events
SINGAPORE: On Wednesday (Aug 14), Pritam Singh, leader of the Workers’ Party, took to social media to express his appreciation for what he believes is Singapore’s greatest strength: the strong multiracial connections shared by its people.
Mr. Singh, who serves as the first official Leader of the Opposition in Singapore, shared numerous photos from a recent Serangoon North Hawkers and Residents Association dinner. The gathering marked their last seventh-month celebration, with the group concluding their long-standing tradition.
He acknowledged the difficulty in getting younger Singaporeans to take over such organizations, a common struggle for many similar associations.
Representing Aljunied GRC since 2011, Mr. Singh mentioned how many attendees reflected on the importance of the event to their parents, which drove them to participate in the final dinner.
Calling the association a “foundation for grassroots friendships,” Mr. Singh recalled a conversation with some Indian men whose families had been involved in the association for years. He hopes that Singapore continues to nurture such multiracial bonds, describing them as the nation’s secret weapon.
Additionally, other Workers’ Party MPs have been active in seventh-month events. On Aug 11, MP Dennis Tan from Hougang SMC joined a prayer session and dinner with residents.
Louis Chua, MP for Sengkang GRC, emphasized how seventh-month prayers and gatherings allow both current and former residents to reconnect, highlighting the lasting spirit of community.
