Worker Frustrated Over Forced Leave Encashment Without Consultation

Netizens Weigh In on Employer’s Right to Approve or Reject Leave

SINGAPORE: A Singaporean employee took to social media to express his dissatisfaction after his superior decided to encash his remaining leave without seeking his consent.

The worker posted on the popular forum r/askSingapore, stating that he had been intending to use his remaining weeks of leave, only to be informed that the decision had already been made to cash it out. The employee, who works under contract for a foreign bank, was not consulted about the matter.

“Isn’t this my entitlement? I wasn’t even given the option to clear my leave,” he wrote, questioning whether this practice complied with MOM or company policies.

Netizens were quick to explain that leave approvals are ultimately at the discretion of the employer, especially when a contract is nearing its end. Many suggested that the company likely prioritized operational needs, such as ensuring a smooth transition during the handover period.

Some commenters pointed out that while it may seem unfair, leave encashment is common, and many workers would prefer to be paid for their unused days rather than take time off. “As long as you’re compensated, it’s fair,” one user noted.
