Healthcare and Hospitality Lead Surge in Singapore’s Shift to Gig Work

Rising Earnings and Flexibility Drive More Workers to Embrace the Gig Economy

SINGAPORE: An increasing number of Singaporean workers are gravitating towards gig work, drawn by the autonomy and flexibility it provides, according to a new report by Jobs On Demand (Jod). The report, titled Empowering Flexibility: A Deep Dive into Singapore’s Gig Work Landscape with Jod, highlights that the gig economy’s growth is most noticeable in the healthcare and hospitality industries.

Singapore Business Review noted that rising average earnings, particularly in healthcare, hospitality, and the food and beverage sectors, may also be contributing to the popularity of gig work. According to the report, gig workers typically earn between S$14 and S$20 per hour. Healthcare gig workers, in particular, earn between S$13 and S$22 per hour, while those in hospitality and F&B make between S$12 and S$16.

Jod reported that hourly wages for gig workers have surged, with an increase of 23% to more than 100% compared to the Local Qualifying Salary for part-time workers, which was raised to S$10.50 in Budget 2024. This rise in pay has led to a 25% spike in first-time gig work applicants, who now account for one in ten gig workers. Around 20% of Jod’s members hold multiple gigs, clocking more than 40 hours a week.

Jod emphasized the importance of improving gig workers’ satisfaction and retention as the sector expands. Employers are encouraged to offer skill development opportunities, certifications like food handling, and better benefits to support gig workers’ long-term career growth.
