A New Photo Spot in Kota Kinabalu: The Maybank Branch Goes Viral

Closed for Renovation, the Bank Becomes a Hit Among Tourists for Its Bright Design

MALAYSIA: Kota Kinabalu (KK) has unveiled a surprising new attraction—a closed Maybank branch on Jalan Pantai has turned into a favorite destination for tourists. The iconic yellow logo remains a draw for visitors eager to snap photos, even as the bank undergoes renovations.

This trend was ignited by a Chinese influencer who shared images of the branch on Xiaohongshu, causing the location to gain popularity and making it a hotspot for photography.

DATAXET NAMA notes that the vibrant lighting and the striking yellow logo give the bank a modern, urban vibe, making it ideal for those seeking picturesque city scenes.

Around 40% of users online have highlighted the location’s photogenic qualities, describing it as perfect for leisurely walks—an opinion that has gained traction due to Xiaohongshu’s coverage.

Roughly 15% of netizens remarked on how the increase in tourists from China and Korea has benefited local businesses. Many believe that cultural elements, such as the lucky tiger head and the color yellow, which symbolizes prosperity, enhance the branch’s appeal.

However, 10% of online commenters expressed confusion regarding the site’s newfound popularity, while another 10% compared it to other local banks, questioning its uniqueness. Some speculated that this trend might be part of a marketing strategy by Maybank, while others humorously commented on the unexpected attention.

Local businesses are also seizing the moment. A1 Noodle is promoting its Bak Kut Teh soup packets by linking them to the branch’s fame, and coffee brand Atukuupi has posted pictures of their products in front of the location.

Kota Kinabalu MP Chan Foong Hin joined in, sharing his experiences at the branch and noting the popularity it has gained among tourists, especially on social media. He expressed hope that this attention showcases KK’s rich tourism potential.

Maybank Malaysia has welcomed this surprising trend, emphasizing that their yellow logo represents warmth and connection within the community. They described this phenomenon as an exciting twist, inviting locals to celebrate a brand that has been a part of Malaysian culture for over 64 years.
