SINGAPORE — A domestic helper recently shared her emotional story of being in a relationship with a Singaporean man, only to be left heartbroken when he married someone else through an arranged marriage. In an anonymous confession posted on SGWhispers, she expressed that her experience was far from a “Cinderella story.”
The helper explained that she had been working in Singapore for nearly a decade and was a single mother with a teenage son. Reflecting on her past, she said, “During my first five years here, I met a local guy, and we dated for a year. It ended abruptly when I found out he was going to marry the woman his parents had chosen for him.” She emphasized that his family favored the other woman because she came from a wealthy background, had no children, and had a more stable financial situation, while she was a domestic worker and a single mother.
The breakup, she noted, was painful, especially because her boyfriend’s family assumed she was only after his money. However, she clarified that throughout their relationship, she never asked for financial support and often shared expenses during their dates. She also highlighted her independence, stating that she had been raising her son on her own.
Fast forward two years, and the man reached out to her again. He complained about his marital life, saying that despite his wife earning more, they had no savings. He shared that his wife lived as though she were still single, frequently going out, spending on luxury items, and refusing to have children, fearing it would affect her lifestyle and figure.
Although she remained silent as he vented, the helper confessed that she still harbored feelings for him, despite knowing she needed to move on. She reflected on her experience, writing, “I never thought this would happen to me, like something out of a movie. But it did. Check the mindset of who you choose to marry.”
In a related story, last year, an employer took to social media seeking advice after discovering that their domestic helper was sneaking out every night. In an anonymous post on the FDW in Singapore Facebook group, the employer revealed that their helper would leave the house between midnight and 2 a.m., returning around 4 or 5 a.m. They suspected she was staying overnight in hotels with her local boyfriend.
The employer expressed feeling betrayed as they had trusted the helper fully and liked her very much. Ultimately, the family decided to send her home. After speaking with her previous employers, they discovered that she had exhibited similar behavior, which led them to terminate her employment as well. However, the previous employers had not reported the issue to avoid complications.
