SINGAPORE — Minister for Home Affairs K Shanmugam addressed a question in Parliament regarding traffic congestion at the Woodlands and Tuas checkpoints, pointing out that inconsiderate drivers have worsened the situation. He explained that incidents involving drivers cutting queues or using the wrong lanes have contributed to the delays at these key border points.
In response to Bukit Batok Member of Parliament Murali Pillai’s inquiry about the number of immigration counters and efforts to reduce congestion, Mr. Shanmugam noted that the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) collaborates closely with the Traffic Police to manage traffic flow. Despite their efforts, some drivers’ actions, such as queue-cutting, continue to add to the gridlock.
Mr. Shanmugam shared that, as of December 2022, Woodlands and Tuas checkpoints had 302 and 276 counters, respectively, for immigration clearance. He emphasized that checkpoint traffic has returned to pre-pandemic levels, with nearly 400,000 travellers passing through daily. During this period, approximately 92% of vehicle clearance counters were fully operational.
The Minister also highlighted several initiatives aimed at managing congestion over the years, including the flexible deployment of officers based on traffic conditions. He assured that the ICA would continue to work with its partners to improve traffic flow, particularly during peak periods.
Looking to the future, Mr. Shanmugam mentioned the upcoming Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System Link and the redevelopment of Woodlands Checkpoint, both of which are expected to increase processing capacity and alleviate congestion.
He concluded by encouraging travellers to remain patient during peak times and to do their part in ensuring a smoother experience.
Netizens offered their own suggestions in response to the Minister’s comments, providing ideas on how to further manage traffic at the Tuas and Woodlands checkpoints.
