Supporting Workers in Bridging Skills Gaps and Navigating Career Pathways

Employers must collaborate with employees on skills development and career guidance for a future-ready workforce.

At the SkillsFuture Forum 2024, key industry leaders discussed the need for companies to help employees enhance their skills and career trajectories while aligning with business goals. The focus was on bridging the gap between workers’ skill sets and the evolving job market, especially in sectors like food and beverage (F&B), cybersecurity, and others.

Jedrick Tan, CEO of Fei Siong FastFood (Popeyes PLK Singapore), highlighted the benefits of skills-based hiring in the F&B industry. By focusing on practical abilities rather than academic qualifications, businesses can tap into a broader talent pool and ensure a more efficient hiring process.

Dilys Boey, chief executive of Workforce Singapore, emphasized the importance of internal workforce development. She advocated for upskilling current employees, especially as their roles evolve with industry demands. Employers should broaden their hiring criteria and offer career guidance to help workers navigate career changes.

Addressing a structural skills mismatch, Gloria Arlini, COO of Generation Singapore, pointed out the need to understand adult learners’ psyche and offer flexible, accessible training options. Arlini also encouraged a shift in mindset, where employees should remain open to new roles and evolving job markets.

Employers like Tan also prioritize long-term career health by supporting employees with structured development pathways and mental well-being programs. Aligning employee aspirations with business needs is critical, Tan said, as companies seek to retain talent and promote career progression.

As the pace of job transformation accelerates, with skills lifespans shortening to about five years, industry leaders agreed that both employers and employees must be agile. The SkillsFuture Report and government-led initiatives like industry transformation maps guide businesses in identifying emerging skills and preparing for future demands.

Ultimately, fostering a culture of continuous learning and flexibility in career planning will be key to navigating the future of work, ensuring both personal and organizational success.
