HDB to Prioritize Housing Needs of Singles in Upcoming Survey

Survey of 8,600 Households Aims to Gather Insights on Public Housing Experiences

The Housing and Development Board (HDB) in Singapore is set to conduct a significant survey focused on the housing needs of single non-homeowners residing in HDB flats. Between October 2023 and April 2024, 8,600 households and single occupiers will be invited to share their experiences and preferences regarding public housing.

The Sample Household Survey 2023/2024, which has been conducted every five years since 1968, aims to gather valuable feedback from residents. This year, it will particularly emphasize the needs of single occupiers living in HDB flats, with the goal of shedding light on their housing aspirations and overall social well-being.

The survey will cover three key areas: the HDB population, residents’ social well-being, and the physical living environment. It will include diverse participants, including families, single homeowners, the elderly, and rental households. Notably, singles aged 21 to 54 who do not own HDB flats will be invited to discuss their views on marriage, housing needs, aspirations, and their overall outlook on life.

In addition to housing preferences, residents will have an opportunity to provide feedback on the facilities available within their HDB estates. Minister for National Development Desmond Lee emphasized the importance of active participation in this survey, stating that it is crucial for designing, building, and rejuvenating HDB homes and estates in response to changing societal and economic conditions.

The HDB plans to send notification letters to residents in batches, and the survey can be completed either face-to-face or online. To ensure a comprehensive approach, the board has engaged Media Research Consultants to conduct the survey, with results anticipated to be available in 2025.

This initiative highlights HDB’s commitment to understanding and addressing the evolving housing needs of its residents, ensuring that Singapore’s public housing landscape remains responsive to the aspirations of its diverse population.
