Sainz’s victory ends Verstappen’s winning streak at the Marina Bay circuit.
Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz Jr. clinched victory at the 2023 Formula One Singapore Airlines Singapore Grand Prix, held at the Marina Bay Street Circuit on September 17, 2023. The night race saw an impressive turnout of 264,108 attendees over three days, surpassing expectations despite venue limitations due to ongoing redevelopment.
Sainz started the race from pole position, having secured his place ahead of Mercedes driver George Russell and his Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc in Saturday’s qualifying session. Throughout the race, Sainz maintained his lead, fending off challenges from McLaren’s Lando Norris and Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton.
This victory marked a significant achievement for Sainz, as it broke Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen’s remarkable streak of 10 consecutive wins and prevented the team from finishing the season unbeaten.
The organizers initially anticipated a turnout of 250,000 spectators, which was less than the previous year’s record of 302,000, mainly due to the closure of The Float @ Marina Bay grandstand. However, in response to high demand, new grandstands were installed, and additional walkabout tickets were made available, all of which sold out.
Looking ahead, the Singapore GP’s promoter reported strong demand for next year’s race, as evidenced by the rapid sell-out of Super Early Bird tickets within just 72 hours of their release. The race at Marina Bay will continue for five more years, following a seven-year contract extension in 2022.
