Pritam Singh, Sylvia Lim, and Faisal Manap Face Potential Criminal Charges Following Committee Inquiry
The cloud surrounding Workers’ Party leaders Pritam Singh, Sylvia Lim, and Faisal Manap appears to be persisting. The trio, all opposition Members of Parliament (MPs), were investigated by the Committee of Privileges (COP) in December 2021 for their involvement in lies told by former MP Raeesah Khan during a parliamentary session.
The situation has now escalated, with the possibility of more severe legal charges. A COP report released on February 10 suggests that all three leaders may have provided false testimonies during the investigation. The report specifically recommends referring Singh to the Attorney-General, signaling potential criminal proceedings. Similar actions were proposed for Faisal, who refused to answer crucial questions during the inquiry.
While the focus remains on Singh’s possible criminal charges, the committee has recommended delaying any further actions against Lim and Faisal until after investigations into Singh conclude. The report also calls for fines against Khan, with $25,000 for the initial lie on August 3 and $10,000 for repeating it on October 4.
As the matter is expected to move to the courts, Singh and Faisal could lose their parliamentary privileges, leaving them vulnerable to criminal prosecution for statements made in Parliament. This raises concerns about their futures, both as MPs and party leaders.
