Severing Diplomatic Ties Over Disagreements Is ‘Not Constructive,’ Says Foreign Minister

Vivian Balakrishnan emphasizes the importance of maintaining international relationships despite differing views.

In a recent address to Parliament, Singapore’s Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan stated that terminating diplomatic relationships with countries based on unfavorable views is neither productive nor a solution to ongoing issues. This comment was made during a discussion on the budget for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in response to calls for Singapore to sever ties with Israel.

Balakrishnan argued that such actions would not compel Israel to alter its policies or alleviate the suffering of Palestinians. He noted that major world powers, including the Permanent Members of the UN Security Council, have not broken diplomatic ties with Israel. Furthermore, several Arab nations—including Egypt, the UAE, and Jordan—along with ASEAN members like Thailand, the Philippines, and Vietnam, have maintained their relationships with Israel.

“As a small nation, we prioritize our national interests by engaging with the international community and fostering ties with as many countries as possible,” he remarked. He also acknowledged the need for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza, recognizing that Israel’s military actions have escalated too far.

Minister Balakrishnan announced Singapore’s plans to provide a third tranche of aid for Gaza via Jordan, following two previous aid deliveries and the dispatch of a medical team to assist casualties.

He emphasized the necessity for Israel to adhere to the laws of war and reaffirmed Singapore’s commitment to a negotiated two-state solution. Balakrishnan also highlighted the interconnection between Singapore’s foreign policy and its internal cohesion, pointing out that while diverse opinions contribute to a healthy dialogue, they can also lead to discord if not managed appropriately.

In the same debate, Second Minister for Foreign Affairs Maliki Osman provided updates on Singapore’s diplomatic relations in the region, confirming that ties with Malaysia are strong, and that the Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System Link is set to commence operations by 2026. He also mentioned that Singapore’s relationship with Indonesia is strengthening through high-level engagements and that ties with other Southeast Asian nations are solid.
