Check-Ins for Most Airlines Affected by Global IT Outage at Changi Airport Resume Normal Operations

Operations stabilize, but some airlines still face manual check-in procedures.

Check-in processes for most airlines at Changi Airport, disrupted by a global technology outage on July 19, 2024, have returned to normal as of July 20, according to the Changi Airport Group (CAG). However, some airlines, notably AirAsia, continued to experience issues, with long queues forming at their manual check-in counters.

In a Facebook update, CAG reported that only a “small number” of airlines still required manual check-ins, assuring passengers that the airport was providing additional resources to assist these carriers. “For passengers affected, we seek your patience and understanding,” the update stated.

The outage was linked to a faulty software update from cybersecurity provider CrowdStrike, affecting over ten airlines at Changi Airport and resulting in the delay of more than 40 flights. Check-in processes, including issuing boarding passes, had to be conducted manually, prompting airport staff to use pen and paper to expedite passenger flow.

The airlines impacted included low-cost carriers such as AirAsia, Scoot, Jetstar, and Cebu Pacific Air. AirAsia acknowledged on social media that its core reservation and check-in systems were disrupted, warning customers of potential delays and longer wait times.

This incident was part of a broader global IT outage that affected various sectors, including media, supermarkets, and banks across the US and Australia. Reports indicated a spike in outages linked to Microsoft 365, with over 150 incidents reported by users in Singapore alone.

The Ministry of Digital Development and Information noted that as of 6 AM on July 20, most affected companies had restored their services, including airline check-ins and other public services. The ministry stated it is closely monitoring the situation and stands ready to assist any companies that need support.
