Despite interest, high costs and a tight timeline prevent Singapore from bidding for the 2026 Games.
Singapore has ruled out hosting the 2026 Commonwealth Games, as announced in a joint statement by Commonwealth Games Singapore (CGS) and Sport Singapore (SportSG) on April 3. After assessing the feasibility of hosting, the organizations decided not to submit a bid for the multi-sport event.
This decision adds to the ongoing challenges facing the Games after the original host, Australia’s state of Victoria, withdrew due to rising costs. The projected budget had grown from A$2.6 billion to A$7 billion.
Despite the Commonwealth Games Federation’s offer of £100 million in financial support, Singapore opted out, joining other cities like Australia’s Gold Coast and Perth, which also dropped their bids due to lack of government backing.
Malaysia, another potential host, similarly rejected the opportunity to host the Games, citing time constraints and insufficient funding as primary reasons.
The 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games saw participation from over 5,000 athletes from 72 nations. Singapore earned four gold, four silver, and four bronze medals during that event, contributing to its strong international sporting presence.
