Singapore Eyes Cautious Approach to Reopening Amidst Declining Covid-19 Cases

Health Minister Ong Ye Kung outlines key considerations for further easing of restrictions

As Singapore continues to chart its course towards reopening, Health Minister Ong Ye Kung emphasized that two critical factors will guide the next steps: the overall Covid-19 situation and potential risks, including the emergence of new variants.
Speaking on Sunday (April 17), Mr. Ong, who co-chairs the multi-ministry task force managing the pandemic, noted that while Covid-19 cases have been trending downward, the government remains vigilant about hospital capacity and the number of severe cases.
“Balancing these considerations is key as we take further steps,” he said. The authorities will continue monitoring for any risks that could trigger another wave of infections.
Singapore’s approach to easing restrictions will focus on five parameters: group sizes, mask-wearing, workplace rules, safe distancing, and capacity limits. Mr. Ong stressed the importance of a measured, cautious approach, explaining, “We always aim to do things moderately and cautiously. This approach has served us well.”
Despite these ongoing health considerations, Mr. Ong also participated in a community event in his Sembawang constituency, where he helped distribute Hari Raya gift packs. The gift packs, which included items like basmati rice, mutton or beef, chickens, and other festive treats, were part of the annual “Meat-for-Eid” event organized by Jamiyah Singapore.
A total of 2,000 food packs will be distributed across nine constituencies over the course of three weekends, helping to bring the spirit of giving to families in need. Dr. Isa Hassan of Jamiyah Singapore highlighted that the event was not only about providing food but also reinforcing empathy and solidarity, especially during the fasting month of Ramadan.
For many residents, like Madam Khatijah Sarbini, 60, the gesture provided a sense of joy, especially after two years of muted Hari Raya celebrations. “So we are very happy this year,” she said, expressing her excitement to visit family, friends, and neighbors during the festive season.
