John Lee Secures Overwhelming Victory in Hong Kong’s Chief Executive Election

With More Than 99% Support, John Lee Emerges as Hong Kong’s Next Chief Executive Amid High Voter Turnout and Tight Security

On Sunday, May 8, John Lee triumphed in Hong Kong’s small-circle chief executive election, receiving over 99% of the votes from the pro-Beijing election committee. Out of 1,461 members, 1,416 supported Lee, marking a significant win in a highly favorable political environment. Voter turnout stood at an impressive 98%, with 1,428 ballots cast.
The election was held under tight security at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, with approximately 7,000 police officers ensuring public safety. Lee, a career policeman and former No. 2 government official, only required 750 votes to win, but his victory was practically certain after securing 786 nominations.
Following the result announcement, Lee expressed gratitude to all voters, regardless of their support, and wished everyone a happy Mother’s Day. His wife, Janet Lam, accompanied him on stage after he received a bouquet of flowers.
Lee’s overwhelming support contrasts with past chief executive elections, where victories were achieved with much less backing. His candidacy was backed almost exclusively by the pro-establishment camp, cementing his role as the frontrunner.
Despite the smooth election process, pro-democracy protests briefly disrupted the morning proceedings, with demonstrators chanting for universal suffrage.
During his campaign, Lee focused on governance reforms, housing, and increasing Hong Kong’s global competitiveness. He also vowed to establish key performance indicators to hold his administration accountable. A recent survey revealed strong public approval, with two-thirds of Hong Kong residents backing his leadership.
Lee’s career trajectory, including his leadership of the Security Bureau and involvement in the controversial 2019 extradition bill, has led to scrutiny. His role in implementing Beijing’s national security law has drawn international sanctions. However, Lee remains focused on addressing Hong Kong’s immediate challenges, particularly the housing crisis and social harmony.
As Hong Kong moves forward under Lee’s leadership, his approach will likely continue to navigate the delicate balance between Beijing’s directives and the city’s distinct societal needs.
