DPM Wong Joins Fundraising Convoy for Children’s Cancer Foundation, Showcasing His Many Talents
SINGAPORE – Lawrence Wong, the Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister, is not just a talented guitarist and TikTok sensation; he has now added motorcycling to his repertoire. On August 14, he participated in a motorcycle convoy to raise funds for the Children’s Cancer Foundation.
The event, organized by Rider’s Aid Singapore, began at approximately 1 PM from the Tampines Heavy Vehicle Carpark, drawing over 700 motorcyclists to support the cause. Mr. Suriya Kumar, the president of Rider’s Aid Singapore, reported that the convoy had already raised around $30,000.
DPM Wong joined the convoy around 1:45 PM, riding from Al-Istighfar Mosque in Pasir Ris to the Loyang Tua Pek Kong Temple, located about 1 km away. At the temple, he expressed gratitude to the organizers for the opportunity to ride after more than two decades.
“I haven’t ridden in over 20 years; the last time was during my student days in America,” he shared. DPM Wong, who holds licenses for various motorcycle classes, began riding while studying in the U.S. and previously owned a Suzuki street bike for commuting in Madison, Wisconsin.
Reflecting on his past, he noted, “When I returned home and started work, I had a scooter for a while. But it has been over 20 years since I last rode a motorcycle. I’m thankful for the chance to ride with Rider’s Aid Singapore to support such a worthy cause.”
During the event, DPM Wong autographed the Royal Enfield Classic 500 motorcycle he used, which will be displayed by the dealership in Ubi. Mr. Kumar reached out to him after learning from a grassroots leader about Wong’s previous motorcycling experience, and they were delighted when he expressed interest in riding himself rather than as a passenger.
As a gesture of appreciation, Mr. Kumar presented DPM Wong with a painting depicting him on a motorcycle.
Ms. Ng Siao Sze, assistant director for community partnerships at the Children’s Cancer Foundation, acknowledged the support received. “This year marks our 30th anniversary, and we’ve achieved so much thanks to the ongoing generosity of everyone involved,” she stated, emphasizing the positive impact on the children and families served by the foundation.
