Government Initiatives to Alleviate Rising Cost of Living
In December, all adult Singaporeans will receive cash payments ranging from S$200 to S$800 through the Government’s Assurance Package, aimed at easing the burden of rising living costs. This initiative targets Singaporeans aged 21 and above in 2024, irrespective of property ownership.
Approximately 2.9 million Singaporeans are eligible for these payments, with around 2.5 million set to receive an additional amount of up to S$200. This extra payment applies to those with an assessable income of up to S$100,000 for the year of assessment 2022, as announced by the Ministry of Finance on Wednesday.
The cash payments are part of a broader set of measures under the Assurance Package, which includes MediSave top-ups and Community Development Council (CDC) vouchers, designed to mitigate the impacts of inflation and the recent increase in goods and services tax (GST).
Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Lawrence Wong previously announced an additional S$1.1 billion Cost-of-Living Support Package, which includes an S$800 million enhancement to the Assurance Package, bringing its total value to over S$10 billion.
Citizens can verify their eligibility for the cash payouts by logging into the Assurance Package official website with Singpass. To receive payments as early as December 5, individuals are encouraged to link their National Registration Identity Card (NRIC) to PayNow by Sunday if they have accounts with participating banks in Singapore.
For those without a PayNow-NRIC-linked bank account, updates can be made with DBS Bank/POSB, OCBC Bank, or UOB via the Assurance Package official website by November 27, ensuring payments are received from December 13. Citizens using the GovCash service will be able to withdraw payments at OCBC ATMs from December 22 after entering a payment reference number sent to them.
In addition to the December cash payments, Singaporeans can expect further support from the Government at the start of 2024. In January, each household will receive S$500 worth of CDC vouchers, available for digital claiming starting January 3. The vouchers will remain valid throughout 2024.
Moreover, residents will receive a rebate of 0.5 to one month’s service and conservancy charges (S&CC), along with U-Save rebates ranging from S$130 to S$210. From February, eligible lower-income seniors aged 55 and above will receive an AP Senior’s Bonus of between S$200 and S$300. Additionally, all Singaporeans aged 20 and below or 55 and above will receive S$150 credited to their CPF MediSave accounts.
