An Australian man was taken into custody on Thursday (December 12) after allegedly starting a fire at Changi Airport. The incident occurred at approximately 2:15am at Terminal 2, and involved a violent altercation with police following the man’s actions.

According to police reports, the 33-year-old passenger is said to have removed curtain blinds from the holding area and set them on fire after being denied a cigarette. He is also alleged to have been verbally abusive during the confrontation.

Upon arrival, officers from the Airport Police Division extinguished the fire. During this time, the man reportedly used a fire extinguisher to spray at the officers, escalating the situation. He was arrested shortly thereafter.

Assistant Commissioner of Police M. Malathi, Commander of the Airport Police Division, emphasised the severity of the man’s actions: “The police have zero tolerance against such brazen acts of violence against police officers and acts that endanger the lives or safety of others. We will not hesitate to take firm action against those who blatantly disregard the law.”

The man is expected to face charges on December 13 for mischief by fire with intent to damage. If convicted, he could face up to seven years in prison and a fine.

Investigations are ongoing into other potential criminal offences linked to his actions.
