Netizen Criticized After Publicly Sharing Incident Involving Customs Officer
On Aug 13, a netizen known as Sky Sg sparked controversy after sharing photos and videos of an Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) officer on social media, following an interaction at Woodlands Checkpoint.
According to his post on a local complaints page, the incident occurred on Monday (Aug 12) at around 12:30 pm. Sky Sg recounted how the officer, upon overhearing a conversation with his wife, questioned if they were talking about him. The officer then asked him to roll down his car window, which was already down, and later summoned him into the office. Sky Sg expressed frustration, calling the 30-minute encounter a waste of time.
The post quickly gained attention, with over 400 shares and more than 100 comments. However, many commenters warned Sky Sg that his actions could have legal consequences. Posting unauthorized photos or videos of officers, especially in protected areas like Woodlands Checkpoint, is not allowed under Singapore law.
Several users advised him to delete the post, suggesting that it would have been wiser to file a formal complaint with the Immigrations and Checkpoints Authority rather than airing grievances online. Others urged empathy, highlighting the difficult nature of the officer’s job.
