A clever attempt to reserve a parking spot goes wrong when a fellow driver ignores the woman standing in the lot, leading to online backlash.
Finding an empty parking spot at a busy mall like Marina Bay Sands can be a frustrating ordeal. In a recent incident on May 15, a couple tried to get around this by using a ‘chope’ method—where one person would stand in an empty parking lot to reserve it while the other circled back for it. The woman in yellow took her position at the spot, but things didn’t go as planned.
As the woman stood guard, another driver, undeterred by her presence, proceeded to reverse into the spot, ignoring her attempts to block him. A dashcam video of the confrontation, posted on the SG Road Vigilante Facebook page, shows the woman knocking on the car and trying to convince the driver that she had already “chope’d” the space. The driver, however, continued parking, while the woman insisted she would report him to the police and mysteriously stated, “I will see you next week,” before walking away.
The video quickly went viral, garnering over 77,000 views and sparking 310 comments. Many netizens supported the driver’s decision, with one commenting, “You did the right thing. We can’t be intimidated by such acts of bullying.” Others humorously noted that the woman’s actions mirrored the common practice of ‘chope-ing’ seats at food courts with tissue packets—something she failed to do in this case.
This wasn’t the first time such an incident occurred. In 2019, a similar situation unfolded in Malaysia, where passengers of a BMW attempted to ‘chope’ a parking spot by standing in it, leading to a heated confrontation.
