Covid-19 Vaccination Program Expanded: Safe for Pregnant Women and Open to Younger Adults by June

Vaccination efforts to include those 39 and under, with new guidelines for vulnerable populations.

Singapore’s vaccination campaign against Covid-19 is set to broaden its reach, offering vaccines to younger adults aged 39 and below by mid-June. Health Minister Ong Ye Kung, co-chair of the multi-ministry taskforce on Covid-19, announced at a press conference that the expert committee has updated its guidance based on both local and global data.

The Ministry of Health (MOH) confirmed that recent real-world clinical data shows no evidence suggesting harm from the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna vaccines to pregnant women or their infants. Therefore, starting from June 4, pregnant women will be able to register for vaccination appointments if they meet eligibility criteria. Breastfeeding women are also deemed safe to receive the vaccine.

Cancer patients undergoing active treatment can also get vaccinated, though it is advised that this takes place in a hospital environment after evaluation by their specialists. The MOH is finalizing vaccination guidelines for such patients.

In addition, individuals with Severe Cutaneous Adverse Reactions can now receive the mRNA vaccines. The expert committee is currently reviewing safety data for those with a history of anaphylaxis, with updates expected within the next two weeks. This will include guidelines allowing certain individuals with prior anaphylactic reactions (to substances unrelated to mRNA vaccines) to receive vaccinations safely.

To facilitate access for older residents, all community vaccination centers will accept walk-ins for individuals aged 60 and above starting June 1, eliminating the need for appointments. Additionally, over 400,000 students from schools and higher learning institutions will be invited to participate in the vaccination program.

As of May 30, Singapore has administered over four million doses, with approximately 2.3 million individuals having received their first dose and 1.7 million fully vaccinated. Minister Ong highlighted the vaccines’ effectiveness, noting that only 1% of vaccinated individuals have developed severe disease compared to 8% of unvaccinated cases.

The vaccination initiative continues to adapt in response to evolving circumstances, ensuring that vulnerable populations are prioritized and supported through informed choices.
