Cybersecurity Initiative Launched to Enhance Training for New Entrants and Professionals

New Program Offers Curated Courses and Certifications to Address Workforce Needs

A new initiative aimed at bolstering the cybersecurity workforce was launched on July 9, 2024, by Education Minister Chan Chun Sing. The Skills Pathway for Cybersecurity, developed by the Singapore Computer Society (SCS), is designed to equip workers with essential skills and certifications necessary for entry-level positions in the cybersecurity field.

The initiative aims to provide guidance for individuals transitioning into cybersecurity, including mid-career professionals seeking new opportunities. Participants will gain insights into career pathways and have access to curated training courses focused on four key job roles: cybersecurity operations centre analyst, cyber incident response and forensics analyst, cyber threat intelligence analyst, and cyber penetration tester. These roles, while entry-level, will pave the way for further career development within the cybersecurity landscape.

According to Chan, this program will serve as a clear signal for aspiring cybersecurity professionals about the skills and certifications required to enter the field, while also allowing employers to tap into a broader talent pool. The initiative is a collaborative effort involving the Cyber Security Agency of Singapore (CSA), the Association of Information Security Professionals, and 13 industry partners, including major players such as Ensign InfoSecurity and Singapore Airlines.

The program will facilitate internships and job interviews, further connecting job seekers with potential employers. It also aims to support CSA’s national effort to develop a professional framework for cybersecurity, similar to those in established professions like engineering and accounting. This framework is intended to elevate industry standards and enhance the overall quality of the cybersecurity workforce.

SkillsFuture Singapore (SSG) will assist participants by providing funding support to help offset training and certification costs, ensuring that financial barriers do not hinder access to these essential skills.

SCS president Sam Liew emphasized the significance of this initiative in addressing the skills gap in the cybersecurity sector, aligning training with industry needs and ultimately strengthening Singapore’s cybersecurity workforce.
