$400M Investment to Address Data Centre Shortage in Gangnam
SINGAPORE, Aug. 2, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Empyrion DC, Asia’s pioneering green data centre developer, announced plans to build a 40MW green data centre (GDC) in Gangnam, Seoul, South Korea. A binding agreement has been signed with a local promoter to acquire 100% of the development rights, with Empyrion DC committing up to $400 million to the project. The transaction is expected to close by September 2022, subject to standard conditions.
Gangnam, often dubbed the “Silicon Valley” of Seoul, is home to major Korean corporations like Hyundai, Kia, LG, and Samsung. With no new data centres in the area for over a decade, the GDC project will help meet the rising demand for data infrastructure in both Gangnam and greater Seoul. Construction is expected to begin by the end of 2022.
Empyrion DC is collaborating with top architects and engineers to design the GDC as Seoul’s first green energy-enabled data centre. The building will feature high-efficiency Building Integrated Photovoltaic Panels (BIPV) and utilize Empyrion’s expertise in energy management to align with global energy efficiency standards.
James Chern, Chairman and Managing Partner of Seraya Partners, shared that Empyrion’s strong local networks enabled them to secure this exclusive deal. With growing demand for data centre space in Seoul, customers have already expressed interest in leasing entire floors ahead of the 2024 completion date.
GDC will be Empyrion DC’s second data centre, following the SG1 Dodid data centre in Singapore. The company also has a pipeline of over 200MW of projects across Asia, including in Taiwan, Japan, and Indonesia.
