SMRT addresses flooding incident; train service remained unaffected.
On the afternoon of November 12, water from a construction site caused flooding at the entrance of Tanah Merah MRT station during a heavy downpour, according to SMRT. Videos shared on social media showed commuters navigating through ankle-deep water at the station entrance along New Upper Changi Road.
Lam Sheau Kai, president of SMRT Trains, explained that the flooding began around 3 p.m., and staff immediately coordinated with cleaners and construction workers to clear the water. For the safety of passengers, SMRT personnel were deployed to redirect commuters away from the flooded areas. The water was cleared by approximately 5 p.m.
SMRT is working closely with construction site supervisors to prevent future occurrences, Lam added. Despite the flooding, train services were not disrupted.
Additionally, the national water agency, PUB, issued a Facebook alert warning of potential flash floods in multiple areas of Singapore, with water levels in drains reaching 90% in locations like Jalan Boon Lay, Lorong Gambir, and Bedok Canal near Upper Changi Road.
