A tragic accident occurred in Taoyuan, north-western Taiwan, on January 25, when an electric vehicle carrying a family of eight crashed into a traffic barrier and caught fire. The crash, which took place along National Freeway 1 in the evening, resulted in the deaths of three children and a man.
The vehicle, a Hyundai Ioniq 5, was transporting two adults and six children. The Taoyuan Fire Department responded to the accident, extinguishing the flames and discovering that the driver, a 40-year-old father, had perished in the crash. Seven passengers were subsequently taken to the hospital.
The family had been on a visit to relatives for the upcoming Lunar New Year, which officially begins on January 29. Among the victims, two boys and a girl, aged between two and ten, died from their injuries the following day. The driver’s wife remains in a coma, and an eight-year-old boy has been intubated and is awaiting surgery. Additionally, a 11-year-old girl sustained second-degree burns, while a four-year-old girl is reported to be fully conscious.
The vehicle, which has a seating capacity for five, was reportedly overcrowded with passengers.
