Experts share key strategies to prevent in-flight theft and keep belongings secure

Reports of in-cabin theft are on the rise, particularly on routes to Vietnam, Bangkok, and China. On December 4, Hong Kong’s security chief revealed that thefts on flights bound for the territory had nearly doubled in 2024, with 169 cases reported within the first 10 months alone, compared to 92 cases across all of 2023.

To help travellers avoid falling victim to these crimes, security experts have outlined practical tips for safeguarding valuables while flying.

Store Bags in Overhead Compartments Across From Your Seat
Rather than placing your carry-on luggage in the bin directly above your seat, choose one across from you. This allows you to monitor your belongings more easily and detect any suspicious activity during the flight. Ensure that bags are locked for added security.

Keep Valuables on Your Person
Avoid leaving wallets, passports, electronics, and expensive jewellery in overhead bins or checked luggage. Instead, secure them in zippered or buttoned pockets. Alternatively, use a secure cross-body bag or money belt under your clothing, especially while sleeping or moving through the cabin.

Avoid Leaving Valuables Unattended
When leaving your seat, such as to visit the restroom, take essential items like passports, electronics, and wallets with you.

Add Keychains or Bells to Bags for Early Alerts
If you must store valuables in the overhead compartments, attach a keychain or bell to your bag. This can act as an alert if someone attempts to steal your belongings.
