JTC Anchors Two A*Star Research Institutes in Jurong Innovation District

Strengthening Singapore’s Advanced Manufacturing Ecosystem

JTC has collaborated with the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*Star) to establish two advanced manufacturing research institutes in the Jurong Innovation District (JID). The Singapore Institute of Manufacturing Technology (SIMTech) and the National Metrology Centre (NMC) will now operate from CleanTech Park’s CT2B and CT3.

This relocation aims to create a cohesive advanced manufacturing ecosystem, providing a collaborative space for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), startups, multinational corporations (MNCs), and local enterprises. JTC CEO Tan Boon Khai highlighted that this initiative fosters innovation by encouraging partnerships among various stakeholders.

The institutes will focus on developing advanced manufacturing technologies to support Singapore’s transition to net-zero manufacturing, aligning with the Singapore Green Plan 2030. A spokesperson from the Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB) emphasized the country’s commitment to building a vibrant ecosystem that leverages technology for sustainable growth.

Key manufacturing priorities for Singapore include the green economy, bio-based economy, mobility, and next-generation hardware, which are expected to create skilled jobs in more automated and digitalized environments. Dr. May Win Naing from A*Star noted the importance of embracing sustainability for competitiveness, stating, “If we do not start getting into sustainability, I think we will be left behind.”

The institutes, particularly SIMTech, will collaborate with industry partners to enhance the competitiveness of Singapore’s manufacturing sector. NMC will focus on data-driven sensor calibration to improve energy efficiency and product quality.

The Jurong Innovation District is gaining traction as a hub for advanced manufacturing, hosting over 100 stakeholders, including well-known companies like Shimano and Hyundai Motor Group. Additionally, Workforce Singapore launched the Sectoral Job Redesign Initiative, aiming to support businesses in adapting to Industry 4.0 by reskilling workers for new job roles in growth areas.

This initiative comes at a critical time, as the manufacturing sector seeks to innovate and attract a new workforce, ensuring that it remains relevant and competitive in a rapidly evolving industry.
