Authorities Dismiss Hackers’ Ransom Demand and Strengthen Cyber Defences
PETALING JAYA – The Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) remained fully operational despite a recent cyber attack, during which hackers attempted to extort US$10 million (S$13.4 million).
In a joint statement on March 25, Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) and the National Cyber Security Agency (Nacsa) confirmed that certain computer systems at KLIA were targeted on March 23. However, immediate action was taken to assess the threat and prevent any disruptions.
“A thorough investigation was launched at once to determine the impact of the breach, and authorities were promptly alerted,” stated Nacsa chief executive officer Megat Zulhairy Megat Tajuddin.
The Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia was also notified, and officials continue to monitor developments closely. Nacsa assured that it is working alongside MAHB to reinforce cyber-security measures.
MAHB managing director Mohd Izani Ghani reassured passengers and stakeholders that airport operations remained the top priority. “We are collaborating with our partners to ensure seamless flight operations and passenger services,” he said.
He further emphasised that the technical and operational teams remain vigilant, implementing protective measures to secure airport infrastructure and maintain uninterrupted services.
Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim revealed that the hackers’ ransom demand was rejected outright. “I didn’t even take five seconds to decide—I immediately said no,” he stated during the country’s Police Day celebration on March 25.
He confirmed that the cyber attack had taken place within the past couple of days and reiterated that Malaysia would not succumb to criminal threats. Instead, the government is now planning additional investments to enhance the nation’s cyber-security capabilities.
