The new membership program offers tailored benefits for Singapore’s youth, addressing their concerns and preparing them for the workplace.
The National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) has introduced the NTUC Starter membership, a new initiative designed to attract approximately 2,500 young individuals aged 18 to 25. Priced at S$36 per year, this membership aims to offer tailored perks and career development programs, responding to insights from a recent report titled The New Gen Worker 2023.
The NTUC Starter membership is part of a broader strategy developed by a youth task force that engaged over 10,000 students from various higher education institutions over the past year. This initiative includes enhancing NTUC’s career mentorship and mental health programs, as highlighted in the report.
Members of the NTUC Starter program will have access to career initiatives under Young NTUC’s LIT (Learning is Triggered) series, which includes mentorship opportunities and master classes. Additionally, they can enjoy discounts at NTUC Club and on movie tickets.
The membership was officially launched during Young NTUC’s annual symposium, LIT Discovery 2023, by Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong. He emphasized that this initiative reflects the labor movement’s commitment to adapt and innovate, ensuring its relevance in supporting Singapore’s youth as they prepare for the workforce.
Wong reiterated the importance of tripartism—the collaboration between the government, employers, and workers—as Singapore’s unique approach to fostering economic success. In a separate development, NTUC also partnered with the Institute of Technical Education to offer sector-specific mentorship, pre-employment workshops, and work opportunities for around 1,500 young people.
