Fans and Family Gather to Pay Final Respects to the Legendary Brazilian Soccer Star.
The stadium where Brazilian soccer legend Pelé showcased some of his most memorable performances will host his funeral on Monday and Tuesday. Santos, the club where Pelé spent much of his illustrious career, announced that the public can pay their last respects at Vila Belmiro Stadium, located outside São Paulo.
Pelé, whose full name was Edson Arantes do Nascimento, passed away on Thursday after a prolonged battle with cancer, at the age of 82. The coffin of the three-time World Cup champion will be transported from Albert Einstein Hospital in São Paulo to the center circle of the stadium early Monday morning.
Visitation for fans will commence at 10 a.m. on Monday and continue until the same time the following day. The funeral procession will take Pelé’s casket through the streets of Santos, passing by the home of his 100-year-old mother, Celeste, who is reportedly bedridden and not lucid.
The burial is set to take place at Memorial Necrópole Ecumênica, a vertical cemetery in Santos, with only family members in attendance. Pelé had spent most of his life in Santos and lived his later years in Guarujá.
In September 2021, Pelé underwent surgery to remove a colon tumor. While neither his family nor the hospital disclosed whether the cancer had spread, he returned to the hospital on November 29, suffering from COVID-19 and a respiratory infection. The hospital confirmed last week that his cancer had progressed.
Pelé was instrumental in Brazil’s World Cup victories in 1958, 1962, and 1970 and is one of the team’s all-time leading scorers, with 77 goals. Neymar matched Pelé’s record during the recent World Cup in Qatar.
