PM Lee to Remain Senior Minister; Cabinet Reshuffle Anticipated Before May 15

Lawrence Wong Outlines Priorities Ahead of Prime Ministerial Transition

As Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong prepares to assume the role of Singapore’s fourth prime minister on May 15, 2024, he confirmed that Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong will continue his public service in the Cabinet as a senior minister. Wong expressed gratitude for Lee’s willingness to remain involved in governance during a press conference on April 16, emphasizing the importance of continuity and gradual change within the Cabinet structure.

Wong indicated that while the upcoming Cabinet reshuffle will not involve major alterations, it aims to reinforce a sense of stability. He highlighted that the transition of leadership in Singapore does not typically involve a complete overhaul of the Cabinet, allowing experienced ministers to continue contributing alongside new and younger members.

While most current ministers are expected to retain their portfolios, Wong is engaging in discussions to understand their preferences regarding roles. He also hinted at potential promotions and the inclusion of a few backbenchers to enhance the Cabinet’s capabilities. The final lineup is expected to be announced at a press conference scheduled for a few days prior to Wong’s swearing-in ceremony.

Looking ahead, Wong outlined his vision for the Cabinet, which includes a balanced mix of seasoned ministers and newcomers to inject fresh perspectives. He intends to prioritize both continuity and reform, aiming to adapt the government’s approaches in response to a rapidly evolving landscape.

In terms of governance priorities, Wong reiterated the urgency of addressing pressing issues such as economic stability, job security, and the cost of living, while also ensuring support for seniors and vulnerable populations. He also mentioned the importance of progressing towards the goals outlined in the Forward Singapore initiative, which seeks to engage citizens in shaping the nation’s future.

Regarding the timing of the next General Election, Wong noted that while the People’s Action Party (PAP) will celebrate its 70th anniversary in November, preparations for the election are a continuous effort, independent of party milestones. He underscored that the PAP must consistently engage with residents to understand their needs and earn their trust, ensuring readiness for the upcoming electoral cycle.

As Singapore gears up for this leadership transition, Wong’s commitment to both innovation and tradition signals a forward-looking approach in steering the nation through future challenges while honoring its established governance frameworks.
