PM Wong’s Introductory Visits to Brunei and Malaysia

First official trip aims to strengthen regional ties following his recent swearing-in.

Prime Minister Lawrence Wong is set to embark on his inaugural official trip to Brunei and Malaysia from June 11 to 12, 2024. This visit marks a significant step in his role, following his swearing-in on May 15, 2024. The itinerary includes meetings with key leaders in both countries, emphasizing the importance of regional relationships.

On June 11, PM Wong will visit Bandar Seri Begawan, where he will be welcomed by Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah. Accompanied by his wife and a delegation of prominent political figures—including Foreign Affairs Minister Vivian Balakrishnan and Minister for Sustainability and the Environment Grace Fu—PM Wong will engage in a royal audience with the sultan and his wife, Raja Isteri Saleha. The delegation will also have the opportunity to meet Crown Prince Al-Muhtadee Billah and Princess Sarah during the official lunch hosted by the sultan.

After Brunei, PM Wong will travel to Kuala Lumpur on the evening of June 11, at the invitation of Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. The meetings in Malaysia will focus on various bilateral issues, as PM Wong aims to deepen cooperation with his Malaysian counterparts.

During his absence, Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong will assume the role of acting prime minister. This visit aligns with the tradition observed by previous Singaporean leaders, reinforcing the importance of Brunei and Malaysia as key partners in Southeast Asia.
