Key Areas of Cooperation Discussed Amid Diplomatic Relations
During his inaugural visit to Brunei on June 11, 2024, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong met with Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, reaffirming Singapore’s commitment to enhancing the long-standing diplomatic relationship between the two nations. The meeting took place at the Istana Nurul Iman, where PM Wong and the Sultan, along with Raja Isteri Saleha, shared an official lunch.
Expressing gratitude for the Sultan’s support throughout the 40 years of diplomatic ties, PM Wong highlighted the significance of their “special relationship,” characterized by a shared strategic vision, personal connections, and a high degree of trust among the leadership. He particularly acknowledged the Sultan’s longstanding support for the training of the Singapore Armed Forces in Brunei and emphasized the deep cooperation between both armed forces.
One of the notable discussions revolved around the Currency Interchangeability Agreement, which has been instrumental in enhancing financial and economic cooperation since its establishment in June 1967.
Looking to the future, PM Wong noted the mutual commitment to expand collaboration in emerging sectors, including sustainability initiatives such as carbon markets, carbon capture and storage, renewable energy, urban planning, the digital economy, food security, education, and public service capacity building.
This visit marks the beginning of PM Wong’s customary introductory trips to Southeast Asian capitals following his swearing-in as Prime Minister on May 15. His next destination is Malaysia, where he will engage with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and other key officials. Accompanying him on this trip are his wife, Minister for Foreign Affairs Vivian Balakrishnan, and Minister of State for Communications and Information and Health Rahayu Mahzam.
