Podcast: Tackling Youth Mental Health with Empathy and Support

A Focus on Breaking Stigma and Offering Accessible Resources

In this episode of “Lens On,” Howie Lim explores the mental health crisis affecting young people, centering on the story of Eleanne, a 27-year-old who has struggled with mental health issues since childhood. With 1 in 10 teenagers in Singapore experiencing mental health disorders, the situation is dire, and Eleanne’s experience reflects the challenges many face when trying to seek help. Stigma, social pressure, and the overwhelming complexity of modern life often prevent youths from accessing the care they need.

The episode touches on why mental health issues are so prevalent among youths, with experts pointing to the brain’s developmental stages as part of the problem. Senior psychologist Tan Sze Ying, from the Singapore Association of Mental Health, explains that the underdeveloped frontal cortex, which governs critical functions like decision-making and impulse control, leaves young people vulnerable to feeling overwhelmed by the pressures they face today.

Beyond individual struggles, organizations like Limitless are stepping in to make a difference. This non-profit offers a safe space for young people to seek help, even without parental consent. Asher Low, Limitless’ executive director, speaks from personal experience, having struggled with body dysmorphia in his youth. His empathy drives him to offer meaningful support to others, and through his leadership, Limitless has guided thousands of young people through their darkest times, including individuals like Eleanne.

Eleanne’s journey of initially resisting help, due to stigma and fear, to eventually finding support through mental health professionals, shines a light on how vital it is to create open conversations about mental health. The episode emphasizes that early intervention, coupled with destigmatized access to mental health resources, is crucial for helping today’s youth navigate their emotional well-being.

The podcast serves as a reminder that more needs to be done in breaking down the barriers young people face when seeking help, and it calls for greater societal empathy and more accessible mental health support systems.
