Newly Elected Leader Emphasizes Unity and Multiracialism at Inauguration
During his swearing-in ceremony on September 14, 2023, President Tharman Shanmugaratnam, who achieved a significant 70.4% of the votes in the recent presidential election, affirmed his commitment to enhancing Singapore’s unity while exercising caution in managing the nation’s reserves for future challenges.
Emphasizing his campaign slogan, “Respect for All,” President Tharman expressed his intention to collaborate with both the government and the community to strengthen multiracialism and cultivate a more inclusive society. He stated, “I will do my utmost to support initiatives that deepen the respect we accord to our fellow citizens, of all backgrounds and in every walk of life – the respect for all that is at the heart of our solidarity as Singaporeans.”
While acknowledging Singapore’s current cohesive society, characterized by trust and unity, he cautioned that such harmony is neither guaranteed nor everlasting, particularly in light of global changes. “Diversity will also increase as society matures, but Singaporeans must not allow any differences to divide them,” he remarked. He stressed the need for a reinforced sense of togetherness, stating, “Now, more than before, we must grow our sense of togetherness as fellow Singaporeans. It will make us a better society, and add to our ballast as we face a more turbulent world.”
To deepen and strengthen multiracialism, President Tharman outlined plans to promote interactions among different communities through initiatives such as exploring sports predominantly played by specific ethnic groups and facilitating collaborations among self-help groups.
In addition to fostering multiracialism, he highlighted the importance of building a culture of kinship and respect. This includes supporting disadvantaged youth, individuals facing mental health challenges, caregivers, and the elderly.
Moreover, President Tharman expressed his commitment to actively supporting the arts and sports, noting the burgeoning vibrancy of Singapore’s arts scene and the success of its athletes. He stated, “In both fields, the best years are ahead of us. By nurturing talent in the arts and sports and supporting them through their journeys, they will inspire us.”
Addressing the management of Singapore’s reserves, he pledged to be “scrupulous and independent” in decisions regarding their use, especially in light of potential future crises and long-term challenges such as climate change. He acknowledged that while Covid-19 was not the last crisis, careful consideration will be essential if the reserves need to be utilized to address existential threats.
Furthermore, President Tharman committed to promoting Singapore’s interests internationally, advocating for the country’s values and enhancing its reputation within the global community. Amid ongoing geopolitical tensions, he stated that Singapore must navigate its path by firmly upholding its principles rather than aligning with one side or another.
In closing, President Tharman expressed gratitude for the support of Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and acknowledged the guidance of his predecessor, Halimah Yacob.
