President Tharman Pledges to Strengthen Singapore’s Unity in a Troubled World
As Singapore’s newly inaugurated ninth president, Tharman Shanmugaratnam has committed to enhancing national unity and cohesion amidst global uncertainties. In his swearing-in ceremony held at the Istana on September 14, 2023, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong highlighted the symbolic importance of the presidency as the country faces a troubled world.
Running under the campaign slogan “Respect for all,” President Tharman expressed his intention to collaborate with both the government and the community to reinforce multiracialism and cultivate a more inclusive society. He stated, “I will do my utmost to support initiatives that deepen the respect we accord to our fellow citizens, of all backgrounds and in every walk of life,” emphasizing the importance of respect at the heart of Singaporean solidarity.
Acknowledging the high level of trust and unity among Singaporeans, he cautioned that such cohesion is not guaranteed and must be actively nurtured, especially in light of changes seen globally. “Now, more than before, we must grow our sense of togetherness as fellow Singaporeans,” he remarked, stressing that this unity is essential as Singapore confronts a more turbulent world.
To enhance multiracialism, President Tharman plans to promote greater interaction among communities, encouraging initiatives such as shared sports activities and collaborative art forms. He believes these efforts will contribute to a strong culture of kinship and respect within an inclusive society. Additionally, he aims to support disadvantaged youth, individuals facing mental health challenges, and lonely seniors.
President Tharman also intends to boost the arts and sports sectors, asserting that Singapore’s future in both fields is promising despite recent successes.
Prime Minister Lee noted the importance of having a president with the right experience, values, and character as the nation navigates uncertainties. President Tharman’s decisive electoral victory on September 1, where he garnered 70.4% of the vote, reflects the public’s support for his message of unity. Lee also pointed out that the election demonstrated a reduced emphasis on race, with voters choosing a candidate from a minority community based on merit.
In his commitment to safeguarding Singapore’s reserves, President Tharman pledged to be “scrupulous and independent” in making decisions about their use, particularly in future crises. He warned that the challenges posed by Covid-19 are likely not the last and underscored the importance of preparing for existential threats such as climate change.
He reiterated the need for Singapore to navigate global tensions, including the complex US-China relationship, by upholding the country’s values and principles. “We must always advance our long-term national interests by standing up firmly for our principles rather than choosing one side or the other,” he asserted.
In his address, President Tharman expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Lee for his support and to former President Halimah Yacob for her guidance. PM Lee assured the government’s cooperation in these efforts, expressing confidence in President Tharman’s ability to manage the critical duty of guarding Singapore’s reserves, given his extensive economic and financial expertise.
Moreover, PM Lee acknowledged the contributions of former President Halimah, recognizing her role as a unifying figure and her efforts in fostering understanding and respect among diverse community groups.
