Focus on Domestic and International Work Before Election Announcement
Prime Minister Lawrence Wong stated on June 12 that while there is speculation regarding the timing of Singapore’s next general election, the government still has significant work to complete both domestically and externally. He emphasized that the election would be called at an appropriate time, countering suggestions that it could occur as early as this year.
In response to inquiries about the potential for a general election before November 2025, Wong acknowledged the current political climate and reiterated that the Electoral Boundaries Review Committee (EBRC) has not yet been convened. This committee is a crucial first step in preparing for the election.
Wong’s comments come amid discussions on his busy schedule, which includes several major international summits planned for the latter half of the year. These include the ASEAN Summit in Laos from October 6 to 11, the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit in Peru from November 13 to 15, and the G20 Summit in Brazil from November 18 to 19.
He noted, “The calendar is quite clear… You can already mark out which are the dates when I will be busy, when I will be away, and which are the dates when I will be in Singapore.” Wong indicated that the timeline for the election will be made clear once the EBRC is convened and its work is completed. For now, he urged the public to focus on the ongoing domestic agenda and his engagements with international partners to advance Singapore’s interests.
