First Female President in Two Decades to Lead the Legal Body
The Law Society of Singapore has made a historic decision by electing Sam Hui Min Lisa as its 29th president. This appointment is significant as she becomes only the third woman to hold this prestigious position in the society’s history. Sam’s election marks a pivotal moment, especially considering it has been two decades since a female president has led the society, with Arfat Selvam being the last to do so in 2003.
Sam Hui Min Lisa is no stranger to the legal landscape in Singapore. As the managing partner of Lisa Sam and Company, a firm she founded in 2004, she brings a wealth of experience and expertise to her new role. Her practice areas encompass corporate law, commercial litigation, family law, and general litigation, showcasing her versatility in the legal field.
Having been admitted as an advocate and solicitor of the Supreme Court of Singapore in 1997, Sam has garnered extensive experience by working in both large and medium-sized law firms prior to establishing her own practice. Her long-standing commitment to the legal profession is evident, and her leadership in various capacities within the Law Society has equipped her with the skills necessary to guide the organization forward.
Since 2021, Sam has served as the vice-president of the Law Society’s executive committee, where she has been involved in numerous initiatives aimed at advancing the legal profession in Singapore. Her election to the presidency comes after a thorough council election process, which concluded on October 25, demonstrating the confidence her peers have in her leadership abilities.
Sam will officially assume the presidency on January 1, 2024, succeeding Jason Chan Tai-Hui, who was elected president in July 2023 following the untimely passing of the society’s 27th president, Adrian Tan. Sam’s term is set to continue until December 31, 2024, during which she will have the opportunity to implement her vision for the society.
Her election is not just a personal achievement; it represents a broader trend towards increased representation of women in leadership roles within the legal profession. Sam’s leadership is expected to inspire more women to pursue careers in law and take on leadership positions in the future.
As she steps into this important role, Sam Hui Min Lisa aims to address key challenges facing the legal profession in Singapore. Her experience and commitment to excellence will undoubtedly contribute to the continued growth and development of the Law Society, as well as the broader legal community in Singapore.
