Sergio Perez Wins Singapore Grand Prix Amid Safety Car Investigation

Red Bull Driver Claims Victory, But Post-Race Scrutiny Looms

SINGAPORE — Red Bull’s Sergio Perez triumphed at the 2022 Formula One Singapore Airlines Singapore Grand Prix, showcasing an impressive performance at the Marina Bay Street Circuit.
Starting from the front row behind pole sitter Charles Leclerc, Perez quickly overtook the Ferrari driver as the race began and maintained his lead throughout the event. However, his victory remains tentative as he faces an investigation regarding a potential safety car infringement.

If validated, this win would mark Perez’s first in Singapore and make him the fifth different Formula 1 winner at this venue, joining the ranks of previous champions such as Nico Rosberg (2016), Fernando Alonso (2008, 2010), Lewis Hamilton (2009, 2014, 2017, 2018), and Sebastian Vettel (2011, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2019). This victory also marks Perez’s second win of the season, following his success in Monaco earlier in May.

Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz secured second and third places, respectively, rounding out the podium. Championship leader Max Verstappen, who began the race in eighth position, finished in seventh place.

In his post-race remarks, Perez stated, “It was certainly my best performance; I controlled the race. The last few laps were so intense. I gave it everything for the win today.” Regarding the investigation, he expressed uncertainty, saying, “I have no idea what’s going on. I was just told to increase the gap. All in all, a fantastic day.”

Leclerc reflected on his race, acknowledging, “I pushed all the way, but the bad start put us on the back foot. I had a little bit of wheelspin. It was a difficult race – a good night’s sleep now, and we’ll get ready for Japan.”
