Singapore and Malaysia Commit to Bilateral Engagement and New Collaborative Opportunities

Leaders discuss ongoing projects and tackle complex issues like airspace and maritime boundaries

During a joint press conference on June 12, 2024, Singapore’s Prime Minister Lawrence Wong and Malaysia’s Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim expressed their commitment to enhancing bilateral relations while addressing longstanding issues. This meeting marked PM Wong’s first official visit to Malaysia since assuming office on May 15.

PM Wong emphasized that Singapore and Malaysia would maintain a consistent strategic approach in their engagement, while also being open to new ideas that could further strengthen ties. Anwar praised former Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong for his support in fostering close relations and noted PM Wong’s similar dedication.

The discussion covered key projects, including the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (SEZ), as well as unresolved matters such as water supply, airspace, and maritime boundaries. Anwar remarked that these issues should be resolved to enhance future relations and strengthen the friendship between the two nations.

Both leaders reiterated their commitment to addressing these matters constructively. They plan to provide strategic direction to their officials, ensuring that negotiations proceed with a collaborative spirit. PM Wong expressed the desire to take stock of progress at the upcoming Leaders’ Retreat in Malaysia later this year.

Addressing the media, Anwar affirmed that Malaysia must continue to sell water to Singapore, highlighting the need for collaboration on airspace and maritime issues. He stressed the importance of resolving the finer details quickly, while acknowledging that reaching a resolution before the year-end meeting may be ambitious.

Areas of Cooperation:
PM Wong highlighted that Singapore and Malaysia already cooperate across various sectors, including health, education, culture, trade, and investments. He pointed out the Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System Link and the Johor-Singapore SEZ as significant projects expected to enhance cross-border flow of people, goods, and investments.

Both leaders also acknowledged their shared commitment to working within the ASEAN framework on regional matters such as energy, trade, and joint investments. Anwar proposed the idea of sending Singaporean teachers to Malaysia to enhance English education and introduce other subjects, showcasing a willingness to explore innovative collaborative ideas.

PM Wong emphasized that new opportunities for collaboration extend beyond government and civil service to encompass the private sector, NGOs, civil society, and educational institutions. He expressed a desire to identify ways to bring both countries together through diverse initiatives.
