Minister Gan Kim Yong highlights the need for collaboration on AI regulation and talent development.
Singapore is in discussions with the United States to develop a talent exchange programme in artificial intelligence (AI), said Trade and Industry Minister Gan Kim Yong. Speaking at the end of his visit to Washington, DC, on 1 May 2024, Gan noted that discussions are progressing well, as Singapore seeks to attract AI professionals and invest in training its workforce.
Singapore, keen to regulate AI responsibly, views the US as a key partner due to its leadership in AI. The countries are working together to establish guidelines to ensure AI’s safe and secure development, particularly in the context of the US-Singapore Partnership for Growth and Innovation (PGI), which explores collaboration in the digital economy and clean energy.
As part of these efforts, Gan emphasized the need for global cooperation in setting AI guardrails to prevent misuse by criminals. Singapore’s relationship with the US has evolved significantly since the US-Singapore Free Trade Agreement (USSFTA) came into effect 20 years ago, with both countries benefiting from closer ties in various sectors.
During a USSFTA meeting with US Trade Representative Katherine Tai, the importance of adapting to changing economic priorities, such as worker-centred policies and supply chain resilience, was highlighted. Gan expressed confidence in Singapore’s positioning as a hub for trade and financial services while acknowledging the evolving trade landscape.
Looking ahead, Gan will continue his official trip to Canada and New York.
