Singapore’s political calendar was officially set into motion on Tuesday (15 April) as President Tharman Shanmugaratnam dissolved Parliament at 3pm, following a formal request by Prime Minister Lawrence Wong.

With this, the General Election process for 2025 is now underway. Nomination Day has been scheduled for Wednesday, 23 April, while Singaporeans will cast their votes on Saturday, 3 May.

In a statement shared via Facebook, PM Wong explained his rationale for calling the election, citing increasing instability in global affairs. “The international environment that once supported our progress is shifting,” he noted. “This is a pivotal moment for us to come together as a nation and decide who will lead Singapore into the next chapter.”

Once nominations are completed, the campaigning period will begin immediately and continue for nine days, concluding the day before voters head to the polls.

This election will see 97 parliamentary seats contested across 33 constituencies — including 18 Group Representation Constituencies (GRCs) and 15 Single Member Constituencies (SMCs). It also marks the first time PM Wong will lead the ruling People’s Action Party (PAP) into a general election since assuming office in May 2024.

The Writ of Election was also issued alongside the dissolution of Parliament, officially triggering the countdown to a closely watched election that will determine the country’s leadership for the years ahead.
