New Global Innovation Alliance nodes aim to ease market entry for tech startups.
“Singapore’s tech startups looking to expand into India and Australia now have access to Enterprise Singapore’s (EnterpriseSG) new Global Innovation Alliance (GIA) nodes in Mumbai, Melbourne, and Sydney. This expansion increases the GIA network to 21 cities across 14 countries, enhancing support for Singapore-based startups in entering these markets.
Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat announced the new nodes on October 31, 2023, during the Singapore Week of Innovation and Technology. He highlighted that Mumbai and the newly added cities are among the leading startup ecosystems in their respective countries.
The GIA programme provides a structured approach for tech startups, offering workshops, mentorship, and connections to potential clients and partners. Since its inception in 2019, over 500 Singapore-based tech startups have benefited from GIA’s acceleration programmes. In Mumbai, Startup Reseau will manage two cohorts annually, accommodating up to 20 startups in a 12-week accelerator focused on fintech, supply chain technology, and artificial intelligence (AI).
In Melbourne and Sydney, Haymarket HQ has been appointed to run 13-week accelerator programmes over two years for up to 40 tech startups. These initiatives are part of Singapore’s strategy to enhance innovation and forge cross-border tech partnerships, positioning the nation within the global deep-tech ecosystem.
Heng emphasized the necessity for innovative solutions to address major global challenges, including climate change, aging populations, and emerging health threats. A robust, three-level ecosystem-building approach is essential, encompassing efforts within Singapore and extending to regional and global contexts.
Domestically, Singapore has pledged S$25 billion to support research and development initiatives from 2021 to 2025, with a significant portion aimed at fostering innovation and developing entrepreneurial talent.
In the field of AI, Heng noted the importance of empowering companies to leverage AI while ensuring the safe and responsible use of the technology. To facilitate this, EnterpriseSG and the Infocomm Media Development Authority will introduce a sandbox for startups and small to medium enterprises to explore generative AI applications, scheduled to launch in early 2024.
Additionally, Heng announced the fifth edition of EnterpriseSG’s Sustainability Open Innovation Challenge, with over S$3 million allocated to support solution development. This year, the challenge will have a regional focus, collaborating with global corporations interested in Southeast Asia to develop and test innovative solutions.”
