Support measures in Budget 2024 not meant to increase Singaporeans’ reliance on government: DPM Heng

Singapore’s Budget aims to empower citizens with skills for future growth, not dependency.

Speaking at a forum on March 11, Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat emphasized that the support measures in Singapore’s Budget 2024 are focused on helping citizens upskill rather than fostering reliance on government aid. He highlighted programs like the SkillsFuture Level-Up Programme, which provides a S$4,000 credit to Singaporeans aged 40 and above for courses aimed at improving employability.

During the event, Heng addressed concerns about whether the government should raise the Goods and Services Tax (GST) to 10% to generate more revenue for helping the needy. He dismissed this idea, advocating for a compassionate society where those who are able contribute to supporting the disadvantaged.

Heng also urged businesses to adopt long-term perspectives and explore global expansion, particularly in regions like China, which is undergoing economic transformation. Singapore’s nimble economy, Heng noted, allows it to adapt quickly and remain competitive, especially by equipping its workforce with skills in areas like artificial intelligence.

The government’s efforts to balance innovation with fiscal prudence were key themes throughout the forum. Heng also touched on the importance of nurturing a national identity that transcends cultural backgrounds, fostering unity across Singapore’s diverse society.
