Her Eras Tour and Hit Album Propel Her to the Top of Four IFPI Charts
Taylor Swift has secured the title of global recording artist of the year for 2024, awarded by the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI). This marks her fifth time winning the accolade, more than any other artist since the award’s inception 12 years ago.
Swift’s success was bolstered by her album The Tortured Poets Department, which dominated four IFPI charts: global album, global vinyl album, global streaming album, and global album sales. According to the IFPI’s statement on 18 February, the album led the global album sales chart with 5.6 million units, including both physical copies and full downloads.
In second place on the global album sales chart was K-pop sensation ENHYPEN with their album Romance: Untold, selling 3.4 million units.
Swift’s record-breaking Eras Tour, which became the first to generate over US$1 billion (S$1.3 billion) in revenue, also renewed interest in her previous releases, several of which made it onto the 2024 vinyl and streaming album charts.
“This year has been monumental for Taylor, and it’s remarkable to see her music resonating with fans worldwide,” commented IFPI chief executive Victoria Oakley.
Swift first received the IFPI global recording artist of the year award in 2014, and again in 2019, 2022, and 2023. The award is based on global sales across streaming, download, and physical formats, reflecting an artist’s entire catalogue.
For 2024, Canadian rapper Drake secured the second spot on the IFPI global artist chart, followed by K-pop group SEVENTEEN in third place.
