Company consolidation reflects shifting market conditions and commitment to workforce support
On February 27, 2024, Tetra Pak announced the closure of its manufacturing plant in Jurong, Singapore, impacting approximately 300 employees. The decision is part of the company’s strategy to consolidate its packaging material production into other factories across the region, a move attributed to “changing market dynamics.”
The Food, Drinks and Allied Workers Union (FDAWU), representing Tetra Pak employees in Singapore, confirmed that the company has collaborated closely with the union to support affected workers. Retrenchment packages will be provided in accordance with established union norms.
Tetra Pak emphasized its ongoing commitment to the Singapore market, stating it will maintain a significant office in the country focused on business management, human resources, and marketing. A spokesman for the company noted that a new, well-connected location will be established in Singapore to host one of its largest offices in the Asia-Pacific, accommodating up to 250 staff.
The Jurong factory, which began operations in 1982, has served as a production site and export base for customers in Singapore, partnering with brands like Yeo’s, Ayam Brand, Pokka, and Nestlé.
Affected employees were informed about the closure on the same day, and the company has initiated discussions throughout the week to explore new job opportunities and outplacement support. Tetra Pak aims to exceed statutory requirements for retrenchment support, ensuring that employees are treated with respect and care.
The FDAWU’s general secretary, Tan Hock Soon, acknowledged the early notification of the consolidation and highlighted the union’s role in facilitating support for retrenched workers. The union plans to leverage its network of companies and the NTUC Training and Placement Ecosystem, which includes various resources for employment support.
A job fair and interviews with potential employers are in the works to assist affected workers, along with opportunities for career coaching, job interviews, and training to enhance skills for new employment prospects.
