Wake Up, Singapore Issues Correction Over False Claims on COP Proceedings

POFMA Office directs alternative news site to amend misleading statements about MPs Pritam Singh and Faisal Manap.

Wake Up, Singapore, an alternative news site, has been directed by the POFMA Office to issue a correction regarding false statements related to the Committee of Privileges (COP) proceedings. The correction concerns posts made on February 10 about the COP’s investigation into former MP Raeesah Khan’s admission of lying in Parliament last year.
The posts claimed that the COP recommended referring MPs Pritam Singh and Faisal Manap for criminal proceedings, despite there being no such finding by the committee. Pritam Singh is the Leader of the Opposition and a Workers’ Party MP for Aljunied GRC, while Faisal Manap is also an MP for the same constituency and WP’s vice-chair. The posts misrepresented the committee’s findings, suggesting that Singh and Manap should face criminal charges without basis.

The Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office and Leader of the House, Ms Indranee Rajah, instructed the POFMA Office to issue the correction. The office stated that Wake Up, Singapore must post a notice acknowledging that its statements were false and misleading. The correction was posted by the news site on its Facebook and Instagram pages.

According to the Gov.Sg article, the COP had found that Singh, along with WP chairman Sylvia Lim and Faisal Manap, had lied under oath during the committee’s investigation. The committee recommended referring Singh to the Public Prosecutor for perjury, but did not recommend criminal charges against Faisal Manap. Instead, the committee called for Faisal to be referred for repeatedly refusing to answer questions.
