Where’s the Chicken? Couple Disappointed with ‘Chicken Cutlet’ in GrabFood Order

Heng Heng Western Food Faces Backlash Amid Chicken Shortage

A couple in Singapore were left frustrated and disappointed after receiving an unsatisfactory chicken cutlet in their GrabFood order from Heng Heng Western Food, located at Block 684 Hougang Avenue 8. The order, which was placed on Thursday (May 26), included a chicken cutlet that was more flour than chicken, leading the couple to question the value and quality of the meal.
Stomp contributor Amanda, who shared photos and a video of the meal, expressed her disappointment, stating, “The chicken cutlet was sliced thinly and deep-fried, but there was hardly any chicken inside.” The meal, which was supposed to be part of a set, cost $27.70, including a $3.30 delivery fee. Amanda remarked that the standard of the food had drastically dropped, and her husband, Roger, left a one-star review for the stall on the GrabFood app.
Having patronized Heng Heng Western Food before, Amanda noted her disappointment was especially poignant as she had enjoyed the traditional-style western food in the past. However, she understood that there is a chicken supply shortage affecting many eateries. “We understand there’s a shortage of chicken supply, but this is going too far,” she said.
The chicken shortage has been a hot topic in recent days, with wet markets and supermarkets in Singapore seeing shelves emptied as customers rushed to stock up. This followed an announcement by Malaysia on May 23 that it would halt the export of up to 3.6 million chickens per month starting June 1, due to domestic price and production issues.
Despite the supply concerns, Minister of State for Sustainability and the Environment Desmond Tan assured the public that Singapore has adequate chicken stock and urged against panic buying. Supermarket chain FairPrice has confirmed a stockpile of frozen chicken that could last about four months, with more supplies on the way.
For now, let’s hope some of that stock finds its way into future chicken cutlets.
